Questions? Please call us at:

Number One: Reputation.

How do you go about selecting the best Attorney to represent you in the event that you are involved in an accident and are injured? It may sound like a simple problem to solve given the fact that there are literally tens of thousands of Lawyers practicing in New York, with many holding themselves out to be qualified to represent you. Since your right to receive fair compensation is at stake, it is important that you make a wise choice in selecting a Lawyer. There is no question that the expertise of your Attorney will effect the amount of compensation that you will or will not receive.

There are number of factors that you should take in to consideration when selecting your Attorney as well as things that should not be done under any circumstances.

The number one factor is reputation.

Ask around. Have your friends and relatives heard about Trolman, Glaser & Lichtman? Have they been represented by our law firm? If so, were they happy with the resolution of their claim? If they were, the odds are that you will be, too.

Partner Jeffrey A. Lichtman is president of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the largest trial lawyer bar association in New York.

Second: Experience.

Have they been in practice for a long time and do they limit their practice to personal injury cases? Do they handle important and significant cases? If so, they are probably equipped to do the job for you.

Third: Advertising.

There are many Lawyers advertising to the public today. Most are reputable. Some are not capable of achieving a satisfactory result. Select the most experienced Lawyers and those who have been around the longest. The chances are that if they have been successful in the past, they are more likely to get a good result for you.

Fourth: Language.

If you are Spanish speaking, are there people in the Lawyer's office who speak Spanish? It is obvious that the ability to communicate with your Lawyer is extremely important for both you and the ultimate success of your case.

Fifth: Take Your Time.

Don't make a hasty decision. Consider all of the factors that we have mentioned before signing any documents.

What Should You Not Do?

First, never, yes, never retain a Lawyer who solicits you while you are a patient in a hospital bed. Unfortunately, there are numerous unqualified and dishonest Lawyers who prowl the Hospital wards of our City, seeking out un-suspecting accident victims. It is possible that hospital personnel could be in the "employ " of these Lawyers engaged in this unsavory practice.

Second, never retain a Lawyer to represent you unless that Lawyer limits his practice to cases involving personal injuries. You may find that the Lawyer who represented you with regard to a family problem or Social Security matter is not experienced with handling a serious personal injury case, and will be compelled to refer your case to a different Lawyer who you have not met and do not know. The referring Lawyer, of course, receives a referral fee.
