$12 million dollars. Two twins, not quite three years old, were burned horrifically when an unsecured gas range tipped over in their apartment and hot oil splattered over them. The settlement was reached on the eve of the trial, $6 million awarded to each child.

A Staten Island girl who was severely burned in a New York City Housing Authority apartment was awarded $7.7 million by a jury. The child, who lived in the Markham Gardens Houses, suffered a seizure in the bathroom and fell against an uncovered steam pipe. The girl was hospitalized for five months and required skin grafts to treat second- and third-degree burns on her face, ear, shoulder, arm, and wrist.

A jury awarded $4 million to a tenant who sustained neurological damage after being shot in the neck by an intruder. Poor security in the apartment building had allowed the intruder to enter.

$2.7 million dollars. Blanca Colon, 37, was admitted into Woodhull Hospital complaining of respiratory distress. She was not properly diagnosed and treated, which led to her untimely death. This medical negligence case was settled for $2,750,000. Blanca left behind her husband, one adult daughter and two minor children.

$750,00. A young Bronx man and his wife successfully sued the City of New York, because the City failed to provide working locks on the door of his building. As a result, the man was mugged and shot by a criminal who gained entry to the building.

A 30-year-old woman who lost a small portion of her finger when a defective door closed on her hand received a $125,000 settlement from the building owner. $175,000. A woman was assaulted in the lobby of her building due to the lack of security and a failure to maintain locks. The perpetrators were never identified.
